Danaus genutia

Egg

like a truncated cone. with longitudinal and transverse ribbing and cream to yellow in colour, it is laid singly 0.6-0.7 mm high 0.4 mm wide

Larva

Danaus genutia larvae as being banded blueish white with white and yellow spots, but in Australia it has a beige, maroon or black body with cream and yellow spots and white transverse bands

Pupa

Stubby, 1.5 cm long, green or pink with a fine black line and a transverse band of gold spots at abdominal segment 3 and 2 gold dots towards the anterior end of the pupa

Adult

Medium. forewing 3.5 cm. heavily veined in black on reddish orange, (especially in flores) it can be confused with Danaus chrysippus, but the latter is smaller, without heavy veining on the hind wing. D.g.genutia  is said to give off a smell of dead rat! (Victor Mason)

Larval food plants

Asclepiadaceae such as the vine Sarcostemma esculentum (Australia) and many others of the same species such as Raphistemma pulchellum (Malaysia).

Distribution

From Indian and China and the Philippines through most og Indonesia (not Maluku), to North and North West Australia. The name Danaus genutia intensa (Moore) was given to specimens from Java, Bali, Bawean, and Boneo.
