The dolphins that we want to talk about is live in the freshwater rivers, not in the sea like the other dolphin we know. It is Orcaella brevirostris, the Irrawaddy dolphin or known as Mahakam Pesut.

Mahakam pesut called as freshwater dolphin because their habitat is in the tropical rivers. This mammals still have close relation with Orcinus orca or killer whale.

The existence of Mahakam Pesut is gradually decreasing, their population around Mahakam River is not more than 100 left. Human activity in the river, for example big boat passing is distract and give negative impact in that “short-beaked” animal behavior.

Conservation status of Mahakam Pesut is critically endangered and the most endangered animal in Indonesia. Indonesia government assign Mahakam Pesut as protected animal based on PP No.7 in 1999 about Preservation of Plants and Animals.

Irrawaddy dolphin is unique and clever animal, their face shape also cute and lovely. Do you know that they can use ultrasonic waves for detection and communication? Sure they really are lovable animal.

Then are we going to let this Mahakam Pesut extinct from Indonesian waters?
